A Motown lançou o álbum quase paralelo ao lançamento de um membro de uma outra famosa família, Donny Osmond. O álbum tem sucessos históricos do cantor como a faixa título e "I Wanna Be Where You Are", e gravações cover de músicas clássicas da época como, "Ain't No Sunshine" de Bill Withers, "Rockin' Robin" de Bobby Day, "You've Got A Friend" de Carole King e "Love Is Here And Now You're Gone" das Supremes. A Motown investiu no repertório romântico do de Michael, já que as músicas dos Jackson 5 eram mais agitadas, algo que deu certo e durou em todos os álbuns solo do cantor na gravadora.

Music And Me 1973

O álbum foi lançado em um momento difícil da vida de Michael, pois estava entrando na adolescência. Influenciado pelos amigos Stevie Wonder e Marvin Gaye Michael queria gravar suas próprias canções, mas a gravadora Motown não apoiou a idéia o que levou a saia dos Jackson 5 futuramente.

 Como os jackson 5 estavam em turnê o álbum não teve muita repercução vendendo 2 milhões de cópias, o álbum possui regravações, mas que não tiveram grande repercuções, mas que tornaram clássicos na voz de Michael tais como With a Child's Heart, All the Things You Are, Too Young e Doggin 'Around.
